Language, discourse and communication | The Noah Mozes Department of Communication and Journalism

Language, discourse and communication

Language is the most basic means of communication. Through it we pass on knowledge, make contact with others and construct the social, cultural and political worlds in which we live. Accordingly, language and discourse researchers try to understand how people use words to express identity, how words bring about changes in social reality and how the worlds we create and others create for us shape our ways of thinking and behaving.

Discourse researchers in the Department of Communication focus on understanding the role of sign systems in a variety of contexts (daily, public, political, etc.), and on critical analysis of texts in written, broadcast, and online communication.

The department also hosts the ‘Discourse Forum’, a regular research discussion forum for discourse scholars and advanced students, including participants from across university departments, other academic institutions in Israel, and guests from abroad.

Research topics of department faculty members include:

Prof. Zohar Kampf

* The language of friendship

* Public speech-acts

* Discourse and broadcast interviews

* Analysis of political discourse
