Mediated Intentions: journalists’ role in attributing and distributing political intentions

I am a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Communication, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. My Ph.D. research topic is “Mediated Intentions: journalists’ role in attributing and distributing political intentions”, Supervised by Prof. Zohar Kampf.

I hold a Master’s degree in communication and a Bachelor’s degree in Hebrew Language and Communication, both from the Hebrew University. In my Master’s dissertation, I explored the scope of journalistic interpretation through the case study of reporting political condemnation of Israel.

My main areas of interest are political discourse, journalistic mediation and intentions.

My research focuses on the role of intentions in news stories, and on journalists’ role as mediators of political intentions. I use the report of speech acts - verbal vehicles for encoding and decoding intentions - to examine how journalists interpret statements and actions. By so doing, I ask to shed new light on the ways in which journalists construct events and relationships in the social and political arenas.

Research Topic: Reducing Stereotypes by Exposure to Counter-Stereotypical Individuals: A Personalized Approach to Intergroup Interventions

I am a Ph.D. student at the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, supervised by Meital Balmas and Eran Halperin, and a member of the Psychology of Intergroup Relations and Reconciliation Lab. I received my B.A. from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Communication and Journalism and Political Science, and my M.A. in political communication, with a minor in Gender Studies at the Lafer Center for Women and Gender Studies.

My research recognizes that theoretically, atypical individuals have the potential to change observers’ outlook and stereotypical beliefs about outgroups and outgroup members. However, stereotype adjustment in the face of such disconfirmation remains a rare occurrence. Instead, after meeting a deviant, observers often consider atypical individuals an exception to the group. This process where generalization is avoided is called subtyping and stands at the core my research. My primary aim is to test under which circumstances may stereotype-disconfirming individuals invoke the adaptation of stereotypes. Building on the Big Five framework, I assign interventions to individuals based on their personality traits and the subsequent underlying motivations, following the realization that individuals are predisposed differently and thus react differently to stimulation. After recognizing key dimensions of stereotypic expectations from outgroups, a total of four dimensions of disconfirming information are used as interventions: behavior, traits, attitudes, and values.

I am also a TA at the Communication department, teaching theories of social psychology, communication theory, and research methods for BA and MA students.

Research Topic: Composite memory: A memory work of the Holocaust in the digital age

Lital Henig is a PhD candidate at the Department of Communication, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She holds an MA in Communication and Journalism and a BA in Art History and Communication and Journalism, both from the Hebrew University. In her PhD thesis she explores the memory work of the Holocaust in digital culture. She has recently published on the commemorative Instagram-project “Eva Stories” in New Media & Society. She currently serves as a PhD student in the Hebrew University’s research team of the international EU-funded 4-year project “Visual History of the Holocaust: Rethinking Curation in the Digital Age”.

Research Topic: The ecology of news ‎‎(dis)trust

I am a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In my dissertation project I aim to develop a comprehensive conceptualization of (dis)trust in the current media ecology. To this end, I seek to account for multiple news trustworthiness dimensions, as well as the trust attitudes of various actors who participate in the creation and interpretation of the news.

I hold a Master’s degree in communication, and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Communication, both from the Hebrew University. My MA thesis, written under the guidance of Prof. Keren Tenenboim-Weinblatt, explored the various aspects of suspicion and distrust in the perceptions of journalists covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
